It isn't enough for the urban school teacher in a multicultural classroom to simply acknowledge diversity and accept cultural differences among students.
Along with recognizing diversity, an effective urban teacher must develop the ability to relate to learners, families, colleagues and community members of diverse cultures. The multicultural educator must become culturally competent.
The road to cultural competence is paved with self-reflection and self-assessment. After setting forth on the journey to provide a culturally relevant education in a fair, equitable classroom of diverse learners, different teachers will discover different paths. What is important -- is to realize that the discovering and learning must never end.
